National Schools' Fire Safety Day
19 November 2008
On average, 35 children under the age of 11 are killed in fires in the UK every
year, and around 1170 are injured. By taking part in the first 'National
Schools' Fire Safety Day', you have an opportunity to help reduce these
figures. The lessons learned by your pupils might one day save their lives and
the importance of this day cannot be overstated.
The main objective of the Day is for your Year 2 children to learn five key messages relating to 'planning a safe escape'. Guidance notes are available which suggest curriculum-related activities and there are also various activities which can be downloaded and photocopied for your pupils to work from (see below). The Day will hopefully be a fun and engaging experience for your pupils, which will teach them the importance of planning a safe escape in the event of a fire.
The 'official' day of the event is Wednesday 19 November 2008 and much of the media's focus will be centred around this particular day. You are however welcome to hold your day of activities on any date week commencing 17 November. That said, even if this particular week is not convenient, you are urged to still participate during a preceding or subsequent week. The most important thing is for your pupils to learn these life-saving lessons.
Your local Community Fire Safety Team is aware of this event, and you may wish to contact them — via your local Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters — to obtain further support for the day.
If you have any questions you may email the event's organisers.
