Brief description of project: The aim was to use different initiatives to raise achievement across the board through emotional intelligence, and to build on that learning by improving transition between school phases. A variety of initiatives was used, including 'Brain Gym', 'Wake and Shake', and Philosophy for Children (P4C). There was also an 'emotional well-being' project which involved schools in the area and used guest speakers and conferences for staff. By involving schools from across the area, it helped to ease the transition for pupils from junior schools to secondary schools.
Outcomes
- For pupils there was measurable improvements e.g. mental mathematics and development of oral skills.
- Curriculum links between schools and across phases led to an increase in children's confidence and respect for difference.
- Staff gained development opportunities by overcoming language barriers with BME/EAL children.
- Parents were also encouraged to be involved in learning which increased opportunity to work together in the community.
- Pupils felt more confident as they went through the transition phase from junior to senior

- Relevant training for staff and workshops for parents
- Involving all first and middle schools in the initiative
- Using a mix of initiatives so that a variety of needs were met.
