Geography

Teachers at all key stages will find useful information about teaching geography in this section. For more detail on classroom material, there is also a dedicated geography resources page.

The Geographical Association (GA) and the Royal Geographical Society with IBG (RGS-IBG)

These are the two membership organisations for geography and geography teachers in England.

The GA is oriented to geography teaching in primary and secondary schools. Its manifesto A Different View shows what the GA stands for. The RGS-IBG is the leading learned society for geography working with schools and universities, and the public and policy makers. Drawing from each others' complementary strengths, the GA and the RGS-IBG are working together to support teachers of geography. Together they promote the educational significance of geography for the young 21st-century citizen and provide a comprehensive range of resources, networks and professional support.

The GA and RGS-IBG provide resources and support on their respective websites:

Further continuing professional development (CPD) in geography

A Training and Development Agenct (TDA) report has defined CPD as 'reflective activity designed to improve an individual's attributes, knowledge, understanding and skills. It supports the individual's needs and improves professional practice'.

TeacherNet's CPD section advises on how to make progress in your teaching career. It includes any activity that increases teachers' knowledge or understanding and improves their effectiveness in schools.

The Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) website offers teacher support and the Teacher Learning Academy helps schools and teachers to focus on professional learning that is practice-based and provides national recognition

TeacherNet's events calendar also gives details of CPD events and conferences.

The Society's Chartered Geographer (Teacher) and the GA's Geography quality mark provide accreditation opportunities for your expertise in geography at the individual and institutional levels respectively.
