About study support
Study support is a learning activity outside normal lessons which young people take part in voluntarily. It is an inclusive term, embracing many activities with many names and guises. Its purpose is to improve young people's motivation, build their self-esteem and help them to become more effective learners. Above all it aims to raise achievement.
How do I set up a study support centre?
The Study Support section of the Standards Site contains a range of materials that will help you to set up and manage a study support programme or develop your existing programmes. Study support is now recognised as an effective mechanism for raising achievement and tackling social exclusion among young people. These materials have been produced in partnership with teachers, study support practitioners and national voluntary organisations. They bring together existing guidance with practical tools and strategies that have been used successfully in schools and authorities across the country.
Case studies
On the Standards Site's Study Support pages you can share your
experiences by adding your own case study and you can view other case studies that will
help you plan your study support activities.
See also TeacherNet's case studies, such as those of Bevendean Primary School or Perry Beeches, for examples of good practice.
Resources
The Resources section of the Study Support pages provides details of publications and research reports commissioned by the DCSF. In this section you will find details of the latest publications, research reports, and contacts for further information.
