School libraries

School libraries can provide a flexible place for learning where project work, individual study, group research, reading and the teaching of ICT can all take place. By supporting and giving access to a broad range of information sources, the school library can stimulate learning and motivate pupils by providing the means to freely pursue subjects which engage them.

School library self-evaluation frameworks

The following self-evaluation frameworks for primary and secondary school libraries/learning resource centres have been produced by the DCSF in conjunction with the School Libraries Working Group. They provide school librarians with a clear way of assessing the quality of what they provide and measuring outcomes, as well as providing evidence of achievement and identifying areas that could be improved. They also provide practical advice and suggestions for improving the way that the library supports pupil learning.

Those who manage school libraries may like to investigate the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council's (MLA) Inspiring Learning for All framework, which is based around five 'generic learning outcomes'. This web-based resource aims to assist museums, libraries and archives to become more accessible and inclusive in the provision of learning opportunities for users and visitors.

Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) guidelines

The second edition of the CILIP Guidelines for Secondary School Libraries (published March 2004) makes practical recommendations for the effective management of libraries in secondary schools. The guidelines are also designed to help school librarians with advocacy in support of the services that they provide.

The National Literacy Trust's Reading Connects supports primary and secondary schools in getting their pupils to love reading. There are many practical ideas on this website which will inspire you to promote reading in your school library.
