DCSF teaching-resources links

Below is a list of DCSF websites, all containing useful resources relevant to various aspects of teaching and policy. Read the brief summary of each site to help refine your search. For further information about these and other keys sites, read our page on finding resources online.

  • Aim Higher
    The Aim Higher campaign outlines the benefits and opportunities students can gain from higher education.
  • Basic Skills Agency
    The Basic Skills Agency is the national development organisation for basic skills in England and Wales and is supported and funded by the Government.
  • Beatbullying
    This is the UKs leading bullying prevention charity working with young people across the UK to tackle bullying issues both on and offline. (See also Cyber Mentors.)
  • Becta
    The Becta site provides information, advice and dialogue related to ICT in education for the schools and FE sectors. From case studies and examples of good practice to practical guidance on using ICT within the curriculum and for administration, the Becta website keeps you up to date with this fast-moving world.
  • Early Support
    ESPP is a DCSF-funded programme that supports the development of effective, well-coordinated, multi-agency support services for disabled children under three and their families.
  • Foundation stage
    Curriculum guidance for the foundation stage
    — a key reference document which sets out to help practitioners meet the diverse needs of all children.
  • General Teaching Council for England (GTC)
    The General Teaching Council is the professional body for teachers, an independent organisation set up to represent teachers' professional interests and to support all teachers in providing the best possible educational opportunities for young people.
  • Healthy Schools
    Healthy Schools is a joint initiative between DCSF and Department of Health (DH). It promotes a whole-school, whole-child approach to health. The programme has existed since 1999 and aims to support all children and young people to be healthy and to achieve at school and in life. By providing opportunities at school for enhancing emotional and physical aspects of health, Healthy Schools helps schools improve health, reduce health inequalities, increase social inclusion and raise achievement for all.
  • Nacell
    Nacell is a DCSF initiative to promote and develop the provision and quality of modern foreign language learning in the primary sector.
  • National Curriculum online
    This site links every national curriculum programme of study requirement to high-quality, relevant teaching resources. Hundreds of great websites are included, rated on their usefulness by teachers themselves. Programme of study requirements are also linked to relevant units in the QCA/DCSF schemes of work.
  • Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted)
    Information on the inspection process, complaints, events, inspection results, reports, advice and guidance issued by Ofsted, publications, queries and links to other sites.
  • The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)
    The QCA is a guardian of standards in education and training. It works with others to develop the school curriculum and associated assessments, and to accredit and monitor qualifications in schools, colleges and at work.
  • Read Write Plus
    The homepage of the Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit, which leads and coordinates all aspects of the national strategy to improve levels of adult literacy and numeracy in England.
  • School in Focus
    This area of TeacherNet celebrates schools that are responding in an innovative way to the needs of their pupils, staff, parents and communities. It includes many examples of schools that have raised standards through new teaching and learning ideas.
  • Science Year
    Resources about Science Year for both students and teachers, including links to related sites and suggested visits.
  • The Standards Site: literacy
    Government site disseminating practical guidance and examples of good practice in schools in England to help raise standards in literacy.
  • The Standards Site: Key Stage 3 Strategy
    This is the Government site disseminating practical guidance and examples of good practice in schools in England. The programme aim of the Key Stage 3 strategy, launched in March 2002, is to improve educational standards for 11— to 14-year-olds.
  • The Standards Site: mathematics
    Government site disseminating practical guidance and examples of good practice in schools in England to help raise standards in mathematics.
  • The Standards Site: Schemes of Work
    This is the Government site disseminating practical guidance and examples of good practice in schools in England. The aim is to help raise standards, particularly in literacy and numeracy.
  • Teachers Magazine
    The online version of the DCSF's magazine for the teaching profession.
  • The Teacher Resource Exchange
    The Teacher Resource Exchange is designed to help teachers develop and share ideas for activities and resources. Contributions are many and varied, from simple ideas and questions to complete lesson plans or schemes of work for other teachers to use in the classroom.
  • Teacher Training Agency (TTA)
    Established by the Education Act 1994, the TTA's purpose is to raise standards in schools by attracting able and committed people to teaching.
  • Virtual Teacher Centre (VTC)
    The VTC is a service for schools professionals providing news, support for professional development and the facility to search resources across the NGfL.
