Sport Relief

Sport Relief is a major national charity event that takes place every two years in an effort to help disadvantaged and vulnerable people, both in the UK and overseas. In 2010 the dates are 19 to 21 March.
Sponsored by Comic Relief in association with the BBC, the national fundraising drive features sport and sport-related fundraising activities such as the Sport Relief Mile, which involves tens of thousands of people in cities and towns across the country.
Participating in Sport Relief at school can help strengthen children's appreciation for community involvement and global citizenship, while also encouraging them to be more physically active. The money raised helps thousands of people across the UK who live in divided and disadvantaged communities, as well as millions of children and young people in the world's poorest countries who face the daily realities of extreme poverty, abuse and exploitation.
Current projects funded include supporting people with mental health issues in the UK, fighting malaria in Africa and helping street and working children in India.
Resources
Teaching resources
The Sport Relief website offers a variety of support materials and resources
for teachers who want to encourage pupils' involvement in the event. These
include both assembly ideas for the whole school and classroom activities.
Primary activities are cross-curricular and link to the Primary Framework for
Literacy, while secondary material links to citizenship, English and physical
education.
Children's stories
These stories, told by young people, can help develop empathy and bring
complex issues to life, as well as stimulate learning, reflection and
action.
Read about how Sport Relief has helped a 14-year-old boy and an 8-year-old to improve their present living conditions and future outlook through the Butterflies project. Operating in Delhi, India, the project helps educate and assist children living on the street or working long, difficult hours for miniscule wages.
Schools Kits
Available for both primary and secondary schools, these free kits include
learning activities, posters and a free DVD to help motivate both
children's learning and their involvement in the Sports Relief event.
