The Royal British Legion
The Royal British Legion is a nationwide charity providing financial, social and emotional support to the ten-and-a-half-million men, women and children, including dependants, who have served, or are currently serving, in the Armed Forces: the Army, RAF and Navy.
The Legion is not just about those who fought in the First and Second World Wars, but also about those involved in the many conflicts since 1945. With recruits as young as 17 being sent on active service, veterans are often much younger than people realise. As well as providing immediate welfare care, the Legion is the nation's custodian of Remembrance, ensuring their sacrifice is never forgotten.
Anyone can become involved in the Legion — you don't have to be ex-service. There is a special youth membership for young people aged 14 to 18.
Resources
Every year the Legion produces a School's Pack aimed at teachers of Key Stages 1 to 4 studying history and citizenship. The packs are free and include specific lesson ideas linked to the National Curriculum, as well as some original footage, website references and additional sources of information for study. There is also a CD-ROM/DVD disk set and an A1 classroom wall chart, both of which are also free. These resources can be ordered by email and the pack can be downloaded.
For further information, visit the Royal British Legion website, or telephone the helpline, Legionline, on 08457 725 725 (open 10.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Friday).
