Primary and Secondary National Strategy
Overview
The National Strategies represents one of the most ambitious change management-programmes in education. Schools need help to accelerate the pace of progress in raising standards in line with the Every Child Matters agenda to achieve their own, and the Government's, aspirations for all children and young people.
The aim of the Primary Framework is to support and increase all children's access to excellent teaching, leading to exciting and successful learning.
The Secondary National Strategy for school improvement is part of a major programme for transforming secondary education to enable children and young people to attend and enjoy school, and achieve personal and social development.

Teaching speaking and listening DVD-ROM
This interactive DVD-ROM was distributed to LA consultants in January, and promotes the value of speaking and listening for pupil learning and achievement in English. The resource allows the audience to identify their needs and choose a study pathway. It can be used by a whole department, self-study (preferably pairs), or by teachers and assistants to use for teaching directly to pupils. Based on research from a range of sources, the DVD identifies the main issues connected with effective speaking and listening, and offers practical guidance to address them. The guidance is supported by video examples of effective classroom practice and includes guidance posters, progression charts and exemplar plans.
This will be distributed to schools via their local authority.
Mathematics subject leader development materials
The spring 2007 subject leader development material DVD provides subject leaders with resources to support professional development through collaborative work with department colleagues. A key objective in using these materials is to begin to develop strategies for working as a department to systematically review the effectiveness of the scheme of work at Key Stage 4. Ideas about the structure of a unit plan, and the features of a rich task which might sit at the heart of the plan, are used to inspire the planning of a new or revised unit.
This resource is now available to local authorities and will be distributed to schools.
Assessing Pupils' Progress (APP) in mathematics
The APP materials have been developed by the National Strategies in conjunction with QCA to support mathematics teachers in strengthening their approach to, and use of, pupil tracking. Materials include a teachers handbook, a set of assessment materials to support teachers' on-going formative assessment in the classroom, the Tracking for success in mathematics booklet and a CD-ROM containing e-copies of all printed materials.
This resource is now available to local authorities and
will be distributed to schools.
