Information, advice and guidance: Continuing professional development (CPD) resources

A range of resources is available to help teachers and schools deliver clear information, advice and guidance (IAG) to students. The resources, commissioned by the Training and Development Agency (TDA), are available online.

Reforms to the 14-19 curriculum mean greater choice and new progression pathways for young people. Students will have the opportunity to combine qualifications and tailor learning programmes to meet their specific needs and interests. For students to make informed choices about their future, they need accurate and impartial IAG.

These resources clarify the recent 14-19 reforms and identify sources of specialist IAG to support students in their career choices. The resources explain the learning routes through the 14-19 phase and are designed to help teachers provide accurate information and talk through students' choices. In addition they provide information on:

  • IAG within subject delivery
  • the responsibilities of teacher and school with regard to IAG
  • the benefits of IAG for students.

Case studies and materials for CPD sessions are also available. The resources can be found on the TDA's IAG web pages.

Careers IAG within subject delivery

The TDA also commissioned subject associations for English, history and modern foreign languages to develop a series of online resources to help teachers introduce a careers dimension within Key Stages 3 and 4 subject delivery. These resources provide practical career-related activities linked with elements of the English, history and modern languages curricula. The resources are now available direct from the subject associations' websites:

Planning careers education and guidance: Report

The TDA has published a report on a recent careers IAG project. The small-scale project was designed to enhance the coordination and delivery of careers IAG within and between schools. Led by careers coordinators, the project used school-based activities to explore ways of improving IAG delivery. The report highlights the transferable learning from the activities and is available from the TDA website.
