Professional development
There are a number of key programmes run by the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services (NCLSCS) supporting the professional development of school managers:
-
The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) — designed to help those aspiring to headship receive the preparation they need for the post. Since 1 April 2004, it has been mandatory for all first-time head teachers in the maintained sector to hold NPQH or to have secured a place on the programme.
-
The Headteacher Induction Programme (HIP) — which entitles first-time substantive headteachers to a grant of £2,500 to spend on training and development activities to meet their needs.
-
The Leadership Programme for Serving Headteachers (LPSH) — designed to provide experienced heads with a chance to focus on how their leadership influences standards in schools.
The continuing professional development (CPD) area of TeacherNet contains a wide range of information on other development activities including courses, case studies of good practice, bursaries and scholarships.
Don't forget that Teachers TV offers a wide range of information and resources on professional development.
The General Teaching Council for England aims to raise the status of the teaching profession and guarantee high standards of teaching and learning. Its site includes news and research information and details of a report on teachers' experiences of continuing professional development.
See the TeacherNet A to Z of School Leadership for further guidance on continuing professional development and in-service training.
