This is the home page for data and information management in schools and other children's institutions, in LAs with responsibilities for children and schools, and across the Education, Skills and Children's Services (ESCS) sector, and for the Information about Children, Education and Schools (ICES) series of conferences and communications.

It covers the School Census and other data collections in the ESCS sector, and the Information Management in Schools (IMS) initiative.

This section includes:

  • the latest news and announcements on data and information management events, such as meetings and subgroups on ICES (formerly known as RIGs and SubRIGs), workshops on specific data collections and other topics
  • links to contacts in the Department and partner organisations.

This section includes the arrangements and specifications for:

  • the termly School Census
  • the School Workforce Census
  • the Children in Need Census
  • other data collections.

This section covers:

  • guidance and a link to the secure school-to-school data transfer service s2s
  • descriptions, specifications and arrangements for the use of the Common Transfer File (CTF) and RAISEonline
  • transfer files related to co-ordinated admissions
  • the submission of teacher assessments (TAs).

04  Data management
This section covers:

  • the Common Basic Data Set unified database, including data definitions, specifications and code sets, and Assessment Component (A_COMP) files
  • first-language data
  • unique pupil numbers (UPN) — background and guidance
  • recording of pupils' absence, attendance and exclusions data
  • the Privacy Notices (formerly FPNs) for children, pupils and the school workforce.

06  MIS software suppliers
This section provides information for MIS software suppliers and reports of meetings.

07  Training and qualifications
This section is under redevelopment. It covers training and qualifications for school and LA staff in building competence in the  effective management and use of data.

This is an archive of superseded pages and downloads, arranged in the same seven sections as the main site (this section replaces the archive previously located in Section 01).
