Introduction

The Education and Inspections Act 2006 established the new Ofsted, requiring them to carry out their work in ways which encourage the services they inspect and regulate: to improve, to be user-focused, to be efficient and effective.

Ofsted set out a strategic plan, explaining how they would meet the requirements, which was published in April 2007. This set out their intentions to ensure that inspection had more impact on outcomes for children and learners of all ages as well as how they would make inspection more coherent, rigorous and proportionate.

Since then the strategic plan has been reviewed and the new arrangements for the inspection of schools have been consulted on, ensuring they are coherent and match the needs of the user. These new arrangement proposals are to be rolled out in September 2009.
